Pride and very frozen joy

I smiled for 45 minutes straight, and the world could have fallen apart and I wouldn’t have noticed because the kids were skating. Bas and Ineke did their first skating lesson tonight at the Sunset skating club and despite spending probably more time on the ice than standing up, they smiled the whole time and really looked like they were having fun. When I think back to the hours that my mom must have spent at the boards in a freezing cold arena while we were learning, I have a whole new appreciation of her efforts. It was a rough start. Bas’ skate was stuck and I couldn’t get it done up, but eventually we got it. Then, on the ice, they started off not being able to even stand up from their little wet bums, and by the end of the lesson, they were moving across the ice with the assistance of volunteers and orange plastic pylons. A very proud mom stood by the boards and cheered them on.
